Java LocalDate – adjustInto() method example

By Chaitanya Singh | Filed Under: Java Date

The method adjustInto(Temporal temporal) of LocalDate class makes the Temporal object to have the same date as this object. For example: Lets say we have two instances of LocalDate class date1 and date2. If we call the adjustInto() method like this date2.adjustInto(date1) then the value of date1 would be replaced by the value of date2.

Method adjustInto() Signature:

public Temporal adjustInto(Temporal temporal)

LocalDate adjustInto() example

In this example, we are have created the instances of ZonedDateTime & LocalDateTime and then we are adjusting the date in both of the them using adjustInto() method.

import java.time.LocalDate;
import java.time.LocalDateTime;
import java.time.ZonedDateTime;

public class Example {
   public static void main(String[] args) {
      //creating an instance of ZoneDateTime
      ZonedDateTime date = ZonedDateTime.now();
      System.out.println("ZonedDateTime before: "+date);

      //creating an instance of LocalDateTime
      LocalDateTime date2 = LocalDateTime.now();
      System.out.println("LocalDateTime before: "+date2);

      //creating an instance of LocalDate
      LocalDate date3 = LocalDate.parse("2017-02-03");

      //Targeting ZoneDateTime to replace the date with date3
      date = (ZonedDateTime)date3.adjustInto(date);
      System.out.println("ZonedDateTime after: "+date);

      //Targeting LocalDateTime to replace the date2 with date3
      date2 = (LocalDateTime)date3.adjustInto(date2);
      System.out.println("LocalDateTime after: "+date2);
   }
}

Output:

ZonedDateTime before: 2017-10-22T23:02:11.727+05:30[Asia/Kolkata]
LocalDateTime before: 2017-10-22T23:02:11.727
ZonedDateTime after: 2017-02-03T23:02:11.727+05:30[Asia/Kolkata]
LocalDateTime after: 2017-02-03T23:02:11.727
